My Philosophy of Teaching Essay - 1400 Words

Philosophy of Education Education is something that every person should be given the chance to attain. It is vital for all people young, old, mentally impaired, ADHD, or whatever characteristic they may encompass. I believe everyone has the right to learn and be taught in an school environment. The law passed in 1975, P.L. 94-142, made numerous changes in the way certain children with special needs was being treated in the public school system. With the update in 1991, IDEA (Individuals With Disabilities act) added to the progress to end discrimination towards all exceptionalities. I hope in the future more changes will be accomplished to fully benefit those with exceptionalities. Education is a gift that needs to be†¦show more content†¦Each child’s attitude towards learning and the way they perceive and comprehend information will be on separate levels from one another some higher, some lower, and some in between. Therefore, to me it is very important to consider each child’s unique individuality when planning a lesson. This way I can be sure that I am accommodating the needs of every child. Furthermore, today’s highly diverse classrooms require a more multicultural approach that doesn’t discriminate against any child. In addition, every child needs to be placed in the least restrictive environment from gifted to special needs children. It is my opinion that children best learn in an environment that will meet all of their needs to obtain an adequate education. Sometimes this means the general classroom and in other cases children need to be placed in a special education class on a full time basis. Full inclusion versus inclusion has been a debate amongst many teachers. For me the decision depends highly on the child and what fits his or her learning style. I’m going to teach eclectically borrowing from aspects of each philosophy. However, there are only two or three philosophical approaches that best fit my personal philosophy towards education including progressivism, existentialism, and a direct teaching method. John Aquinas Is The Most Important Aspect Of The Common Good

Thomas Aquinas believes that killing is wrong and that it does not generate the common good because it goes against nature. Yet, humans kill animals to survive and further, animals kill one another as well as to survive. Killing for survival should not be against the common good because it is a part of nature and the common good of one’s own species. Ayn Rand on the other hand, is an egoist and believes that our moral concerns should at least primarily be for ourselves. However, by only focusing on ourselves we forget about the common good, which is what Aquinas believes is the most important aspect. Aquinas beliefs are too focused on the common good whereas Rand’s beliefs are too selfish. Combining the beliefs of the common good with an egoistic approach would be more suited for humans to generate a greater good for humans. Aquinas was a follower of Aristotle and believed in the common good over evil and his works were influenced by Aristotle but with a Christian twist to it. To Aquinas, moral goodness is the most important aspect of human nature and it is what leads human beings to act as they do, which is Aquinas’ view on the law of human nature. Nowadays, most adults rely on automobiles to get around town, to work, to school, wherever it may be. Adults have decreased their amount of walking to and from places or riding their bikes. This is everyday exercise that can prevent obesity and IS an easy option. Low income and food insecure people are vulnerable to being overweight. These people usually have limited access to affordable, unhealthy food. When they do have access to healthy food, it is likely that the food is more expensive than junk food being sold. Due to this, it is more likely to buy unhealthy food especially being on such a tight budget. Also, fast food is a major contributor to obesity in children and adults. There are little to no healthy fast food restaurants. Fast food is usually unhealthy, cheap and easy to get. Because of this, people will go through fast food restaurants instead of buying healthy food and going home to cook it. Low income neighborhoods have a lot fewer physical activities sources like parks or tracks than higher income neighborhoods. When sources are available, they are usually unsafe areas for children and even adults. For 16 years, lived on farm land where my grandfather owned orchards. Around me there were absolutely no physical activity sources, no where to play, and really no where to go. When moved a couple years ago, we live five minutes away from one park and two minutes away from another. The neighborhood live in now, there are a lot bigger houses and is more of a higher income neighborhood. Never realized this until researching obesity. Families who are low income sometimes stretch their food budgets by skipping a meal or two. This is especially common in others of low income families. Because of this, when their body does get food, it stores the food as fat because it doesn’t know the next time food will come. This leads to obesity in most cases. Low income families usually have high levels of stress due to financial and emotional pressure. Some of the main causes of obesity are stress, anxiety and depression. I personally have experienced weight gain as a cause of stress and anxiety. For the longest time, I kept gaining weight which made me more anxious and even more stressed. I got medical treatment and was given medication to control my anxiety. After taking the medication I was immediately seeing weight loss and was no longer threatened by obesity. There are many more consequences Of Obesity than Only stress and anxiety. Diabetes is a main factor contributing to obesity. Others are high blood pressure, iron deficiency, early puberty, premature death, low self esteem, depression, asthma, and many more. These are some factors that although are mostly caused by obesity, are preventable. Obesity may lead to substance abuse, peer factorization, poor academic performance, and behavior problems. Obesity fits the definition entirely, although there are ways to prevent it including lower calorie intake, smaller portions, more physical activity and better food choices. Some people may say diets and exercise fail due to their body mass index (IBM). This is misleading. IBM is based on a calculation of height and eight combined. So, for example, Arnold Schwarzenegger has a very high IBM although it is all contained of muscles. One can also find people with a low IBM that have a high percentage of body fat. According to WebMD. Com, a child’s total diet and activity determines a child’s weight. This can include computer and video game time. On average, a typical child spends four hours a day watching television. This is not including video game or computer time. As technology becomes more common, the level of physical inactivity will keep increasing. A child’s weight, in my opinion s soles based on their parents or guardians decisions. This including the amount Of time being spent playing video games, watching television, and being on the computer. Two major factor for parents or guardians to prevent their child from becoming obese is to control portion sizes, and to maintain at least two hours of physical activity. This can easily be done by signing up for a school sport or even taking a walk around the neighborhood. From previous observation, child obesity is caused by a parent or guardians ignorance, or failure to be there for their child. I have seen in some cases where a permissive parent will give their child what ever they please in order to keep them happy and busy while the parent gets things done like house work, cooking, cleaning, etc. This not only gives the child an idea that they’re in charge and what ever they say goes, but it shows neglect and carelessness of the parent or guardian. This may contribute to a major problem as the child gets older. Modeling is one of the major ways for a child to learn. If young children see their parents or guardians eating fruits and vegetables, it is extremely likely they will too. I believe that the people that are responsible for these horrific crimes should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. That is why I strongly support Hate Crime Laws Essay. Now, before I dive into this very controversial subject, I should probably define what hate crime laws are so you will have a better understanding of what I am talking about. As I have understood it, hate crime laws are laws that protect certain minorities or groups from bias motivated violence and harassment, and also more harshly punish people that commit these crimes against them. As I started to do my research on hate crime laws I began to notice that there are many experts that are on my side of this issue, and very few experts that oppose hate crime legislation. According to Issues and Controversies on File some experts that do not support hate crime laws believe that these laws perpetuate inequality among U.S. citizens. FBI statistics show that the frequency hate crimes in America are increasing as the frequency regular crimes in America have been decreasing. With the increase in hate crimes in America, minority groups are starting to become the prey of the beasts who commit these awful crimes. So the minority groups (Asians, African Americans, Jewish people, Homosexuals, and others) have been pushing to have hate crime laws passed to protect them from violence and ridicule. The laws that are in affect now are only slightly protective of the minorities in hate crimes. The laws that are in state right now say that a hate crime offender can only be prosocuted for their crimes if they are prohibiting the minority or victum of the hate crime from a federally protected right. Such as attending school, voting and etc. The victums of hate crimes do not think that these laws are very strict. The victoms are demanding newer stricter laws. The victoms or minorities want these newer stricter laws because basically they have no protection from violence. The old laws basically just state that if you are prohibiting the person from doing something you are at fault. Well the minorities want these stiffened and they want them to be harsher. An example of what the minorities want is any act done against anyone with intent to cause bodily harm or death because the person was part of a minority group will carry the fine of being federally prosecuted and with that there is the chance of the death penalty. With making the laws more strict the victums of hate crimes will be gaining more security and more protection from having violence and abuse taken out on them. There really is no opposition to making the laws stricter because it seems that most of the hate crimes that are happening are mostly random acts and just young kids creating stupid acts. Although there are the groups out there like the Skinheads and the KKK which create acts against people who tend to be different then them. These people look at the making these laws more strict as being a threat to what they are about. Most likely they are thinking that these laws will not let them say what they mean and express their views to the world. They will want clauses added into the laws and other things to make sure that they will not be descriminated against. When I started writing this paper I was pro strengthening the hate crimes laws. When I ended writing this paper I stand in the same position I started in. There is no way people should be hurt because of their sexual preference, religion, or race. This country and the world definitely is in trouble because we can not seem to get around the fact that some of us our different. If we can not accept the worlds deversity then there will never be an end to hate crimes no matter what laws are passed. Once we understand that a person is a person no matter what race, sexual preference, or religion they are that will be the cure for hate crimes.
